Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment

In his final book, Horizon, Barry Lopez wrote, “However it might be viewed, the throttled Earth – the scalped, the mined, the industrially farmed, the drilled, polluted, and suctioned land, endlessly manipulated for further development and profit – is now our home. We know the wounds. We have come to accept them. And we ask, many of us, What will the next step be?” And bearing down over all of this, he felt the existential threat posed by global climate change.

Facing this trauma, and watching as the intricate and interconnected systems that sustain us were being dismantled, Lopez asked, “What is our response as a community of artists to the fate of the earth?  Rather than grief, anger, or condemnation, however, Lopez believed that it was his responsibility to offer hope. The Barry Lopez Foundation is committed to supporting artists, composers, and writers whose work moves beyond documenting a threatened and ravaged planet to point toward moments that reaffirm the beauty, inspiration, and hope to be found in our connection to the land. Collectively, these projects will become a record of engagement with the planet, our past, and the future.

The Barry Lopez Foundation Artist Fellowship commissions new work on a biennial basis. Fellowships are awarded by invitation, selected by the Board of the Barry Lopez Foundation, members of its Advisory Committee, and their colleagues. There is no application process, but artists are welcome to submit a portfolio for consideration – please see ARTIST INQUIRIES for additional information.
